The work performed by a pump is a function of the total manometric height and the weight of the liquid pumped in certain period of time.
The power absorbed by the pump (BHP) is the power transferred to the pump shaft. The power transferred by the pump (Ph) is the power absorbed by the liquid.

The BHP power is greater than Ph due to hydraulic and mechanical losses inside the pump. As a result, the pump yield is the ratio of these two values:
